The Higashiyama Cylindrical Water Distribution Tank in Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture. It is registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property. This tank serves to distribute water fairly to irrigation channels.

Beautiful Structure
This cylindrical water distribution basin measures 9 meters 12 centimeters in diameter. As a fair water distribution system, the amount of water allocated to each channel from the basin’s center is determined by the central angle. The Katagai River basin suffered from flooding during heavy rains and severe water shortages in summer, leading to constant disputes over water. To resolve these conflicts, a single intake point was established to supply water equally.

Rich water volume, crystal-clear water
Approaching the water distribution basin, you’ll be amazed by the sheer power of its flow. The constant roar of rushing water is soothing just to watch. Listening to the steady rhythm of the flowing water and its sound transports you to a state of pure tranquility.

A Symbol of Water Management System Modernization
The Higashiyama Cylindrical Water Distribution Tank was constructed in 1954 and has been in continuous use for over 60 years. Regular maintenance involves draining the water to remove accumulated sand and debris, making it an indispensable facility for local residents.

At the Uozu Buried Forest Museum displayed a 3D-printed replica of the Higashiyama Cylindrical Water Distribution Tank. Seeing this made its structure very clear.

With mountains and sea as its backdrop, the water scenery stretches out, a place where you can feel the natural beauty of this land through the wisdom of our ancestors and the overflowing water. The German friend I went with was also deeply moved. Definitely, a place to go!
