In Toyono-cho, Osaka, I found a wonderful cafe run by a woodworking family name Jozu. The café is called JOZU+ because it’s run by Jozu-family, and it locates right next to the Jozu Wood Workshop. The inside of the building has a wonderful woody smell.
Carefully prepared Japanese food
This time, we ate a fermented meal of seasonal vegetables at the fermented food restaurant “Fuu” in the main dining room on the first floor. For the main dish, you can choose fish or meat. As they serve seasonal ingredients using local produce, the menu changes with the seasons. As fermented foods have been used on the Japanese meal since ancient times, miso, pickles, and of course the main dishes are cooked with koji.
The meat dish this time was salt-koji chicken thighs with spicy tomato sauce. It was delicious. For the fish dish, we had salt-koji horse mackerel deep-fried with mushroom sauce. It had a refreshing taste. There was also a lot of rice.
The rice is served in a clay pot. The rice is locally produced in Toyono Town, and is, of course, delicious.
A wonderful atmosphere
It was clear that the meal was prepared with care and love. As the cafe is located in the mountains, it is in a location rich in nature. It was a blissful time spent relaxing surrounded by wooden furniture. There is also a spacious toilet, and it is a very relaxing space, so I highly recommend you to take time to visit.
Shops to visit
The rice bowls, lacquer bowls, clay pots, and wooden trays used in the restaurant and cafe can be purchased at the shop. The shop also sells miso paste and koji, so if you see something you like, you can pick it up or buy it.
The “Black Rice Inari” I bought here was delicious. Apparently it uses black rice made by local high school students, and it had a unique flavor that was very delicious. It was so good that I ate it in no time, so I don’t have any photos….
Overseas visitors were delighted to be able to taste the origins of healthy Japanese cuisine at this place. As it is a popular cafe, I recommend making a reservation!
