My friend gave me ‘Oni Sable’ sweets from Toraya in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture. They are very yummy and tasty, so let me introduce them to you.
Toraya in Fujioka
The company was founded in 1905, 120 years back from now. The first generation sold confectionery by pulling a cart, and it has always been popular with the people of Fujioka, and is a long-established confectionery that is the pride of Gunma Prefecture. The paper bag had a heroic tiger on it.

Gunma’s famous ‘Oni Sable’ confectionery
Now, this is the Oni(=demon) Sable. The packaging is classic, befitting the name Oni Sable.

I’m glad it’s so tasty but low in calories. Good point!

Now it’s time to try them!
Fujioka City, where the Toraya head office is located, is famous for making tiles with demon masks. Demon mask designed tiles are amulet for warding off evil and misfortune. There are specialised craftsmen called ‘oni-shi’, and only they are allowed to make these traditional crafts. These sweets are made in the motif of these demon tiles.

This side is made from the skin of monaka (wafers) and is crispy.

The reverse side looks like this. The skin of the monaka is stuffed with a Western-style sablet. You can see the mix when you look at the cross section. The combination of pastries with different textures gives you a new taste sensation. And of course, they are delicious.

Oni Sablet, a new type of confectionery, is a famous Gunma confectionery. This confectionary is a good match between the Japanese confectionary called ‘monaka’ and the Western confectionary called ‘sable’, and we invite you to taste the depth of Japanese confectionary.
