While you are in Japan, why not visit The Railway Museum @Saitama? ~Tour#107~

鉄道博物館 Saitama

Full-size Japanese railways, both old and new, are on display! This is a railway museum that is sure to excite railway enthusiasts. The site is also quite large. Children will love the fact that they can actually sit inside a train and not just look at it.

This is a museum that we are very proud of and would like all overseas visitors to come and see. You can also see old Japanese rolling stock and feel the history of Japanese railways. Above all, children will be delighted! They will never be bored. This is a must-see spot for children.

Large space for stroller storage!

One of the biggest worries for mums and dads with children is the amount of luggage they have to carry! Just the thought of walking around with that much luggage is exhausting.

As you would expect, the Railway Museum is very popular with children. There is a stroller storage area in a large space at the entrance. Leave your stroller and luggage here and let’s go.

A push programme is the railway diorama.

The railway diorama, which is held on the second floor approximately every 30 minutes, is a highlight. Lifelike miniatures of current trains run like guns. They even give a commentary on each car. The final stage is a night version. The children have a great time.

There are old-fashioned vehicles for all ages.

The now retired Zero Series Shinkansen stands here. You can even go inside!

Of course, there are also modern trains! The Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa.

It is very powerful when you see it in full scale. The three-year-old boy I went with ran at full speed to get on board. Looking around, you can see children, especially boys, who are very excited about trains, running and having fun. Another attraction of this railway museum is that there is space to run.

Hayabusa departs from Omiya Station in Saitama Prefecture. (The Railway Museum is located in Omiya, Saitama Prefecture.)

With features to delight train lovers

The spot for lunch is nice: there is a table by the window on the second floor from which you can see the railway tracks. There are various trains actually running and you can see them live.

There is also a lunch train on the first floor, where you can actually bring your own snacks, rice balls and packed lunches to eat inside the trains. As you would expect from a railway museum. Even the meals are completely railway-inspired. It’s a great way to keep the children entertained.

There are also paid programmes such as driving simulations, which elementary and junior high school students and adults can enjoy as full-fledged attractions.

The Railway Museum, a specialty of Omiya, the gateway to the Tohoku region, is sure to be a very satisfying experience!
