In Japan, handkerchiefs are absolutely necessary when going out. People from other countries are often not accustomed to having them, perhaps because of their culture of paper towels and hand dryers. Giving a handkerchief as a gift to a foreigner coming to Japan will be appreciated.
Chikazawa Lace
Handkerchiefs from Chikazawa Lace Shop, whose main store is located in Motomachi, Yokohama, are recommended as gifts. High quality, the store offers not only carefully selected lace products, but also towel handkerchiefs and other towel products that are popular.
Established in 1901. Started from the manufacture of custom-made fabric and linen products and became a store dealing with reputable laces.
Many handkerchiefs are available only at the limited time, such as seasonal, regional, and collaborative products with other brands, which tickle your fancy. Since a variety of designs are available, there is little overlap in the gifts and they are sure to please. A gift with a very nice stories.
Yacht motif limited to the main store
This time, I purchased a yacht motif, which is exclusive to the Yokohama Motomachi main store. It has a yacht sail, rudder wheel, and cloud motifs laced around the edges. I bought it immediately because of its port town “Yokohama” design. I bought another one as a gift for a friend.
Machine washable
Chikazawa lace handkerchiefs feature lace borders with cute motifs. There are a variety of designs, from cute to humorous. Although they are made of lace, they are machine washable. Since these handkerchiefs are used every day, they should be easily washable. The toweling part is soft to the touch and the material does not degrade easily even after washing.
This is a handkerchief with a star motif that I purchased some time ago. It has been repeatedly washed, but the lace part is still fine. I am glad that the embroidered part does not sag and does not need ironing.
I thought it must be difficult to sew together lace and toweling fabrics, which are made of different materials, and to precisely trim the edges, and was surprised to hear that there are only two craftsmen in Japan who can sew these lace towel handkerchi.
Motomachi Shopping Street
Chikazawa Lace’s main store is located on Motomachi Shopping Street in Yokohama, which was developed when the port of Yokohama was opened to foreign clientele. Motomachi Shopping Street is 600 meters long with a stylish and sophisticated western atmosphere, and is filled with fashionable boutiques, cafes and restaurants.
It is a lovely street to stroll down while shopping at Chikazawa Lace.
Chikazawa Lace handkerchiefs are sold in department stores, cafes, hotels, and even at the airport. If it is not a directly managed store, you will likely find an original design that has collaborated with that store. They make great gifts, so look for them!
