虹の松原 Saga

日本語版

Stretching across 4.5 kilometers in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Niji-no-Matsubara is one of Japan’s largest and most beautiful pine forests. More than one million black pines grow densely along the coastline, forming a long, tunnel-like canopy of deep green.

Originally planted during the Edo period as a windbreak and sand barrier, this man‑made forest is now known as one of the Three Great Pine Groves of Japan.

Walking Through the Pine Tunnel

Whether you stroll along the roadway or the walking path, you’ll enjoy the refreshing scent of pine and the gentle sound of the sea breeze. It’s a peaceful place where visitors can truly feel the quiet beauty of Japanese nature.

虹の松原

The pine grove was first planted by the Karatsu Domain to protect the town from sea winds and drifting sand. Local residents continued to care for it over the centuries, preserving the stunning scenery we see today.

The name “Niji-no-Matsubara” (“Rainbow Pine Grove”) is said to come from the way the forest curves gracefully like a rainbow along the coastline.

At the entrance, you’ll find a charming photo stand—perfect for taking memorable pictures with your guests.

The Seven Mysteries of Niji-no-Matsubara

This forest is also known for seven old legends passed down through generations.

1. The Silent Cicadas When Toyotomi Hideyoshi passed through the forest on his way to Nagoya Castle, the cicadas were so loud that he scolded them. Since then, it is said that cicadas stopped chirping here. Indeed, even on a hot summer day, you won’t hear a single cicada.

2. The “Glared-at Pine” Another legend says that Hideyoshi found the tall pines blocking his view. He glared at them and commanded, “Be lower!”—and ever since, certain pines have remained unusually short.

The remaining five mysteries are also fascinating. If you research them beforehand for an even more enjoyable trip.
