If you’d like to enjoy a slightly unusual experience in Tokyo, why not visit the Mini Mt. Fuji at Shinagawa Shrine?

Within the grounds of Shinagawa Shrine stands a Fujizuka, a small artificial hill built to resemble Japan’s iconic Mt. Fuji. It is a fascinating spot where visitors can enjoy the feeling of climbing Mt. Fuji without ever leaving the city.

What is a Fujizuka?

The Fujizuka at Shinagawa Shrine was constructed between 1869 and 1872. It was created as part of the traditional Japanese belief known as Fuji Faith (Fuji Shinko).

In the past, not everyone could make the long journey to climb the real Mt. Fuji. As a result, small replicas called Fujizuka were built so that people could gain the same spiritual blessings by climbing them.

The hill was made using volcanic rocks, including lava from Mt. Fuji itself, and was carefully designed to recreate the atmosphere of the famous mountain on a smaller scale.

Every year in early July, a ceremonial opening of the mountain climbing season is held here by the local Fuji worship association known as the Shinagawa Marukako.

Experience a Mt. Fuji Climb in Just a Few Minutes

The Fujizuka at Shinagawa Shrine is only about a dozen meters high, so reaching the summit takes just a few minutes. For many visitors, it feels like a miniature version of Japan’s most famous climb.

Even so, the experience feels surprisingly authentic. The entrance resembles a real mountain trail, and the path is lined with volcanic rocks that evoke the landscape of Mt. Fuji.

Views from the Summit

At the top, visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding neighborhood. Because the shrine is located in Shinagawa, it is sometimes possible to spot both airplanes approaching Haneda Airport and trains running on the Keikyu Line, creating a uniquely urban Japanese landscape.

The Fujizuka at Shinagawa Shrine is much more than a small replica of Mt. Fuji. It represents the devotion of Edo-period people who deeply respected Mt. Fuji and sought ways to maintain their faith even when they could not travel to the actual mountain.

For international visitors, the most memorable part may not be the climb itself, but the story behind it: “Why did people in Japan build a miniature Mt. Fuji?” The answer offers a fascinating glimpse into Japanese spirituality, history, and culture.

When visiting Shinagawa Shrine, be sure to climb its Mini Mt. Fuji. The experience lasts only a few minutes, but it provides a deeper understanding of Japan’s unique cultural heritage.
