A buried forest refers to a forest that was submerged beneath the sea due to rising sea levels and later emerged near the coast through uplift. You can see how it remains preserved underwater in its original state at the Uozu Buried Forest Museum.

Giant Tree Underwater
It was said that it is displayed underwater to preserve its condition.

The giant tree in the large tank, kept in darkness to prevent photosynthesis, was an unusual sight and well worth seeing.

2000 years ago
The Uozu Buried Forest is believed to have been formed approximately 2,000 years ago when sediment carried by the overflowing Katakai River buried a primeval cedar forest. Subsequently, sea levels rose, submerging the area below its current elevation.

Dried Wood
This museum also features a dried wood exhibition hall. There, you can touch dried wood and feel the texture of timber from 2000 years ago. Since excavated tree roots were either crafted into artifacts or discarded, very few survive today, making this an exceptionally valuable experience.

Buried forests discovered as natural phenomena and by chance. They’ve become incredibly fantastical museums. Enjoy!
