I found a great hiking trail that’s a hidden gem! It’s the abandoned right-of-way of the JR Fukuchiyama Line, which is now open to the public. It’s located between JR Ikuse Station and JR Takedao Station. Obviously, since trains used to run here, there are no lights in the tunnels! The tunnels are quite long, so you have to make your way through them using your own flashlight—it’s a truly thrilling experience.
First, get off at JR Ikuse Station and head toward the gate leading to the abandoned railway. It actually took me about 15 or 20 minutes to walk to the gate… Please refer to the official guide for detailed directions. It includes photos for each section of the map.

It’s truly refreshing to take your time and soak in the breathtaking views of the Mukogawa River Gorge—which usually just flashes by as you ride the train! Plus, with the remnants of the old train tracks, like the railroad ties, still there, you can walk along while letting your mind wander to the days when trains used to run here.
There are several tunnels along the way, and I’m not kidding—they’re pitch black.
This is a rare hiking experience in Japan—why not give it a try, everyone from overseas?
