Kujukushima is a group of 208 small and large islands that stretch 25 kilometers north from outside Sasebo Port to Hirado Seto, and are densely packed together. The island is said to have the highest density in Japan. The scenery created by the intricate ria coastline and islands of various sizes is so beautiful that it was certified as a member of the international NGO “World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club” in April 2018. 288.5 km, or 81.5% of the coastline, has been preserved as a natural coast, creating a beautiful landscape.
Kujukushima cruising boat ”Pearl Queen”
The Kujukushima cruising boat ”Pearl Queen” takes you on a 50-minute tour of the bay that is home to 208 islands. It has an elegant white hull with a woodgrain interior.
Mysterious view
Unfortunately, when I went, the weather was rainy, sometimes cloudy, and very rarely sunny. When it rains, we stay inside the ship, and when the sun shines, we go outside, making us very busy.
From the deck, you can see the islands up close, which gives you a very refreshing feeling. Of the 209 islands, only 4 are inhabited. Other than that, there are only a few fishermen coming ashore, so the mysterious scene continues.
Pearl farming
According to the onboard announcement, a variety of seafood such as sea bream, blowfish, and oysters are farmed in the Kujukushima waters. We were able to see the aquaculture rafts from the sightseeing boat. We also passed by the pearl cultivation site of Tasaki Shinju. It says “TASAKI”. In a sea as clear as this, beautiful pearls would grow.
Observation space
The route passes through narrow and shallow areas between islands, so you can enjoy impressive views. It seems to be a difficult route to navigate.
We recommend the observation space on the mast that you can climb from the deck. A great spot with a panoramic view of the beautiful ocean and island. When I went up, the wind was so strong that I almost got blown away when I went out to the observation area. Please be very careful.

I recommend taking a cruise boat tour where you can experience the beauty of the sea up close while visiting the scattered islands. Onboard announcements will be made in Japanese, English, and Chinese. There were many overseas visitors on board, enjoying the view of Kujuku Bay from their favorite places. Please come and visit.
