If you have a desire to visit a deep drinking district, the Sanno Koji Inshokutengai District is the place to go. After all, it is close to the Omori station, so it is easy to reach from the center of Tokyo. And yet, it is a deep place commonly called “Jigokudani (hell valley)” by locals.

Three stairs to the Hell Valley

About 40 bars and restaurants are located in a very small area between the west exit of JR Omori Station, between the railroad tracks and Ikegami Dori. To get to this drinking district, one has to go down three flights of stairs leading to the district. The bars and restaurants are lined up in a narrow valley.

Hell Valley

The three stairways were once not paved, just a dirt slope. It is said that the name “Jigokudani (Hell Valley)” came about because many drunks could not climb up the slope because it was too steep after drinking a lot. If it rains, it is still very dangerous to climb the stairs.

Popular spot

Not long ago, there were many frequented locals only unapproachable restaurants were there, but recently, there are more and more fashionable and hip restaurants such as wine bars. The restaurant I have been attracted to for some time was, to my surprise, full again this time and I could not get in. Inside the restaurant, the mood was friendly and the atmosphere seemed enjoyable.

The number of unique and varied stores is increasing, so try to find your favorite one. The number of tourists has been increasing recently, as it is a popular spot for film and TV locations.

It may be difficult to enter the restaurant for the first time, but I think it will be a new experience for overseas visitors. Something unique to experience in Tokyo. The people at the restaurant are all cheerful and fun, so have a good time and enjoy yourself. Something unique to experience in Tokyo.
