Hawai Onsen, located in central Tottori Prefecture, is home to “Bokoro”, a long-established inn founded in 1931 that stands right in front of the Lake Togo.

From the front desk, you can see the open-air bath on the lake right in front of you. The inn and the open-air bath on the lake are connected by a red pier, creating a photogenic scene. You exit the building via a passageway, cross the pier, and head toward the open-air bath on the lake.

Bokoro features two open-air baths on the lake: Asahi (morning glory) and Yūhi (sunset). Since the baths alternate between men and women each morning and evening, you can enjoy both. I preferred Asahi because it was closer to the lake surface and offered a more majestic view.

The hot springs bubbling up from the lake
Both the open-air bath and the large bath inside at Bokoro are 100% natural spring water, flowing freely. They use the abundant hot spring water that bubbles up directly from the bottom of Lake Togo. Since it’s 100% natural spring water, flowing freely without any added water or heating, it was a bit hot when visited. The water temperature varies day by day, so enjoy that too.

Eggs can enjoy the hot springs
At Bokoro, they offer a service where you can make boiled eggs in the hot spring. Write your room number on the egg and place it in the designated hot spring spot for eggs. It’ll be ready in about 30 minutes. You’ll get perfectly cooked hot spring boiled eggs like this. It’s a really fun idea.

Why “Hawai”?
It’s now merged with neighboring towns and called “Yurihama Town,” but before the merger, it was “Hawai Town.” It was apparently called Hawaii Onsen. Now, they’ve written it in hiragana as “はわい” and use it as the hot spring’s name.
Japan’s only hot spring on a lake. You can even make your own hot spring boiled eggs, making it a very enjoyable inn. You can savor dishes generously featuring Tottori’s delicious vegetables, rice, and fruits. Please enjoy Japan’s hot spring life.
Stay tuned for more updates of Japan. See you soon!
