Elegant Architectural Beauty

The pagoda is said to have been constructed to honor Ouchi Yoshihiro, who died in the Ōei War. Standing about 31 meters tall, its layered cypress‑bark roofs curve gently outward, embodying the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the Muromachi era.

The scenery surrounding the pagoda changes beautifully with the seasons—cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vivid autumn foliage, and a snowy landscape in winter. No matter when you visit, you’ll encounter a different expression of its charm.

Chinryutei

Within the park stands Chinryutei, the site where key figures of the Meiji Restoration secretly met to form the Satsuma–Choshu Alliance, which played a crucial role in Japan’s modernization. It is a historic spot where the dawn of a new era was quietly shaped.

A Rare Tree: Crape Myrtle × Pine

Kozan Park is home to an unusual sight—a pine tree growing out of the trunk of a crape myrtle (sarusuberi). The smooth bark of the crape myrtle is said to be “so slippery even monkeys fall,” yet from its trunk emerges a strong, vibrant pine. This unique combination showcases the surprising vitality of nature.
