Iruma City in Saitama Prefecture is famous as one of the main production areas of Sayama tea, known for the old saying:
“Color is Shizuoka, aroma is Uji, but the taste is perfected in Sayama.”

A Landscape of Expansive Tea Fields
東京からわずか1時間ほどで訪れられるにもかかわらず、広がる茶畑はまるで日本の里山そのもの。外国人ゲストにも人気のスポットです。見事に広い。
Despite being only about one hour from central Tokyo, the vast tea fields spread out like a traditional Japanese countryside landscape. It has become a popular destination among international visitors. The fields are impressively wide and scenic.

Frost-Prevention Fans
When you walk through the tea fields, you’ll notice large fan-like machines. These are frost-prevention fans, essential for protecting the delicate new tea buds. They start spinning before dawn in early spring, pushing warm air from above down to the ground to prevent frost from forming.

A Source of Local Pride in Saitama
This is a journey away from the noise of the city and into the roots of Japanese tea culture. Because it’s so easy to access from Tokyo, Iruma is an ideal destination to include in your list of destinations.

Walking through the tea fields, you can enjoy the changing beauty of the rows of tea bushes throughout the seasons— spring’s fresh green buds, summer’s deep green, autumn’s golden light, and winter’s quiet stillness. Every season offers a photogenic landscape worth experiencing.
It’s also fun to compare Iruma’s tea fields with those of Wazuka Town, the home of Uji tea.
