I encountered a chindonya-san, dingdong band. Overseas visitors were all fascinated, snapping photos with their smartphones. They’re hugely popular with incredible crowd-drawing power! Their traditional Japanese hairstyles and kimono outfits are also lovely.

Promoting Events

Chindonya-san are performers who make sounds while parading through the streets in eye-catching brightly colored costumes to advertise. This time, they were attracting people to an event held at Tsukiji Honganji Temple. However, the event itself, called “Analog Market,” aimed to promote the appeal of analog culture and stimulate people’s innate sensibilities. So, the Chindonya-san seemed to be part of the event’s content. I thought it matched the event’s goal perfectly – nostalgic yet new.

Eye-cating performance

They walked down the street in front of Tsukiji Honganji Temple like this, with chindon drums and wind instruments. Their costumes are in eye-catching colors and really cute, right? They definitely achieved their advertising goal of grabbing everyone’s attention. I enjoyed their unique melodies and the rhythm of the chindon drums.

Chindonya-san are famous even abroad as Japanese street musicians. Recently, it’s become quite rare to encounter them even in Japan. If you ever happen to see them, consider yourself very lucky and be sure to pay attention.

Stay tuned for more updates of Japan. See you soon!
