日本語版

When people hear “Tottori,” many visitors immediately think of the Tottori Sand Dunes. But there is another cultural spot that truly deserves attention: the Tottori Museum of Art.

This museum beautifully blends the natural charm of Tottori with the sensibilities of contemporary art, making it a perfect place to experience the depth of regional Japanese culture.

The Famous Brillo Box

One of the museum’s highlights is the Brillo Box, created in 1964 by pop art legend Andy Warhol.

It is a meticulously crafted reproduction of the Brillo soap pad packaging sold at the time— except this one is made of wood. And yes, it’s valued at around 300 million yen, which always surprises visitors.

A Bold Investment to Attract Visitors

The museum acquired this iconic pop art piece with the idea that “showcasing artwork not found in big-city museums would help raise Tottori’s profile.” Although the purchase initially faced criticism, it ultimately succeeded in drawing many visitors— a decision that can now be called a bold and successful move.

Exhibitions Connected to Tottori

Inside, you’ll find a wide range of works—from artists with ties to Tottori to contemporary pieces from Japan and abroad. Overseas visitors often comment that the museum offers “surprisingly high quality for a regional institution.” And yes, you’ll even find characters from GeGeGe no Kitaro.

Museum Shop

The museum shop offers works by local artists and stylish design goods, making it an ideal place to find uniquely Japanese souvenirs. Its concept is “a place to encounter art that brightens everyday life.”

Of course, there are plenty of Brillo-themed items as well. I bought a hand towel myself.
